چکیده

introduction: transtibial amputation is the most common amputation in lower limbs. volume loss of residual limb occurs during daily use of prostheses, which results in pistoning between residual limb and prosthetic socket. the goal of this study was to design and fabricate a pneumatic suspension system in transtibial supracondylar prostheses and to evaluate its effect on residual limb pistoning. material and methods: five unilateral transtibial amputees were participated in this study. after designing and fabricating pneumatic  suspension system,  its  effect  on  residual  limb pistoning was evaluated using photographic method in five static stages including full weight bearing, semi weight bearing, non-weight bearing, 30 n and 50 n loads. results: residual limb pistoning was reduced using pneumatic suspension system during non- weight bearing, 30 n and 50 n static loading. conclusion:   the   use   of   pneumatic   suspension   system   would   reduce pistoning   in supracondylar transtibial prostheses.

A new approach for the pistoning measurement in transtibial prosthesis.

BACKGROUND Good suspension lessens the pistoning (vertical displacement) of the residual limb inside the prosthetic socket. Several methods are used for measuring the pistoning. STUDY DESIGN Clinical trial. OBJECTIVES To introduce and evaluate a new simple method for measuring the pistoning between the soft liner and socket in transtibial prostheses. METHODS Five transtibial prostheses wi...

Transtibial prosthetic suspension: less pistoning versus easy donning and doffing.

Poor suspension increases slippage of the residual limb inside the socket during ambulation. The main purpose of this article is to evaluate the pistoning at the prosthetic liner-socket interface during gait and assess patients' satisfaction with two different liners. Two prostheses with seal-in and locking liners were fabricated for each of the 10 subjects with transtibial amputation. The Vico...

Development of an Air Pneumatic Suspension System for Transtibial Prostheses

The suspension system and socket fitting of artificial limbs have major roles and vital effects on the comfort, mobility, and satisfaction of amputees. This paper introduces a new pneumatic suspension system that overcomes the drawbacks of current suspension systems in donning and doffing, change in volume during daily activities, and pressure distribution in the socket-stump interface. An air ...

Residual-limb skin temperature in transtibial sockets.

The insulated environment of the lower-limb prosthesis can result in elevated residual-limb skin temperatures that may contribute to skin irritation, blistering, and a reduced quality of life. The design and materials of the prosthetic socket, suspension system, and liner can potentially alleviate these conditions, but the thermal load may vary with activity and location within the socket. To c...

Transtibial prosthetic socket pistoning: static evaluation of Seal-In(®) X5 and Dermo(®) Liner using motion analysis system.

BACKGROUND The method of attachment of prosthesis to the residual limb (suspension) and socket fitting is a critical issue in the process of providing an amputee with prosthesis. Different suspension methods try to minimize the pistoning movement inside the socket. The Seal-In(®) X5 and Dermo(®) Liner by Ossur are new suspension liners that intend to reduce pistoning between the socket and line...
